Listen: Live 4ever - Magdalena Bay

Having appeared on BlackPlastic a couple of times over the past year, US-based duo Magdalena Bay are back with their most intensely energetic track yet. Consisting of Mica Tenebaum and Matthew Lewin, the pair came together whilst studying at school to make fun and clever pop music.

Live 4ever is one of those songs that needs big sound and confined space: play this on your headphones, in your car or just on the biggest speaker you can find. That’s because whilst Magdalena Bay’s latest single isn’t subtle, it does boast an extreme amount unbridled excitement that I found infectious. It’s best experienced in a way that makes you literally feel it.

Big rumbling bass combines with hard drums and laser gun sounds to create a starry-eyed pulse-quickening kitchen-sink style record. In just two-and-a-half-minutes, it manages to cram in multiple genres and styles, resulting in something somewhat overwhelming, yet blissfully fun. Check it out below:

Magdalena Bay is US duo Mica Tehenbaum and Matthew Lewin, and having first appeared on BlackPlastic.co.uk last year they are back with new single Story.

Story came out of Magdalena Bay’s moment of clarity - the point where an aspiring artist discovers how hard it can be to succeed. In the words of Mica:

“We wrote Story after the first time our hopes and dreams were dashed. The song is a look back at our previously naive selves, who thought it would all be so easy- as if!”

The duo deliberately focus on swerving the sound of sad-songs-on-the-radio and purposely bring a sense of fun to their music. Despite its inspiration, Story has an upbeat feel, riding on lovely and loose elastic bass and energetic synths. It is only Mica’s breathless vocals that betray an aloofness rooted in disappointment... And the result is perfect - the feeling of an artist performing, and yet keeping just a little bit for themselves.

Listen: Venice - Magdalena Bay

Magdalena Bay are songwriting duo Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. With both of them sharing vocal duties and Lewin handling production, the pair started writing music together in high school, working together to produce pop music as Magdalene Bay back in 2016.

Venice is Magdalena Bay’s latest single and it carries Mica’s hushed vocal along on a gentle groove that sounds a little like melody by clockwork. It is a little spellbinding, shimmering with the kind of breathless easy warmth I can’t resist. I’m not sure where Magdalena Bay actually come from, but Lewin argues “I think this makes us real Californians”, with the Venice in question being Venice Beach, as Tenenbaum explains:

“We wanted it to be a chill indie pop tune with an undercurrent about the world possibly ending. We tried to inject a little weirdness in there. Our own experiences of walking down the Venice Beach boardwalk probably helped with that.”
